Is there a difference? It’s a common question from car fans all over the world. How can one scale model of a particular car be so much more detailed than that of a different manufacturer?
To illustrate the point, let’s go through the specifics of the BBR Ferrari Enzo in 1:18.
BBR Studios in Milan are probably the leaders in model car design and production in the World. If you see models on a stand at a major motor show, it’s likely BBR have made them.
They still manufacture Exclusive Car Models in their Milan studio, but the ‘Italian High End’ range is a new range manufactured offshore, though wholly designed at the BBR Studio.
BBR have a direct working relationship with Ferrari in Maranello. In fact, when we visited their studio last month, they were already working on models of the next generation of Ferrari cars. And this is why we are now releasing accurate models of the new F12 Berlinetta before they’ve even hit the road!
For the Ferrari Enzo, access was given to the original factory drawings and to the cars at Ferrari. So with access to the real thing in various stages of assembly, BBR can re-create the tiniest details and mechanics;
The way the doors open reveal small details such as the vehicle identification plate situated on the edge of the front wing and sill, which can only be found by opening the drivers door.
The opening of the front luggage compartment features a scale correct shock-absorber for a softer closing action and the rear bonnet (engine cover) has a security bar to allow the inspection of the mechanical parts.
Again, just like the real car, the model includes fine details such as an exact replica of the fuel filler cap which bore Enzo Ferrari’s signature.
The exterior road mirrors are of different sizes and are positioned properly.
Present on the front wings and nose are Ferrari badges of the exact size and thickness.
The model reproduces exactly to scale, radiator grilles and radiator fans.
The Enzo body is made from a sandwich of carbon fibre and a honeycomb in aluminum. If you open the front luggage compartment and the rear engine cover you can see a replica of the ‘sandwich’ construction reproducing the different layers of materials.
The engine is re-created correctly, with an accurate 65 degree angled V12, carbon fibre air box, complete exhaust system including catalytic converter.
All cables, leads and oil system can be found in detail, including oil coolers, and of course the suspension system is complete with working springs.
On to the wheels. These are removable by undoing the central aluminum (real) bolt with the wheel brace provided in the box. Once removed the braking system is fully revealed. The real carbon brake disc is replicated, as seen on Ferrari F1 cars, the calipers have Ferrari script on them, the hub is detailed, and fits exactly on the wheel. This is not molded all in one piece!
Aerodynamic spoilers and rear extractors, are derived from F1, and are perfectly reproduced.
The interior is detailed in every way, a grille is positioned on part of the dashboard, you are able to see the pedal box clearly, the seats are produced in soft material to replicate the seats of the car. Instrumentation is made and installed in each model separately, including air ducting, the red engine start button the unique steering wheel is designed for aided visibility, and is complete with buttons.
The front luggage compartment is carpeted, comes complete with fitted scale luggage, which can be taken out of the car. Poltrona Frau designed the original Enzo luggage and again supplied their designs to BBR.
Removing the floor of the baggage compartment reveals the battery, brake fluid reservoir, and exposes the front suspension detail.
All decals are Tampo print and on the Carbon*Fibre variant the whole car is covered with this system. Just as on a real car this is hard to ‘get right’.
In total the model is made up from more than 1143 parts.
Of course all of this is wrapped up in a beautifully presented and designed box and produced in limited numbers to provide a degree of exclusivity...........just like the real thing!!
Can one scale model of a car be so much more detailed than that of a different manufacturer ?
