With the diving watch U1, SINN engineers succeeded in developing a diving watch in which the quality of material and design gives it superior resistance to external influences under extreme conditions of use. In their search for a steel with the desired resistance, the SINN engineers found what they were looking for at the German submarine yards Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH and Nordseewerke GmbH: the steel manufacturers for these shipyards supply small quantities of the original steel of the current German submarine production exclusively to SINN for making diving watches — the very steel of which the external hulls of the German Navy's new submarine class 212, which currently represents the most advanced non-nuclear submarines in the world, are made.

This original submarine steel is not only extraordinarily seawater-resistant but is also of the highest non-magnetic quality without any residual magnetism. Another advantage of this steel is its outstanding ability to be combined with the TEGIMENT Technology. Thus the rotating bezel of the diving watch U1 is surface-hardened as standard to 1500 Vickers. Likewise, the anti-reflective coat of the flat sapphire crystal glass has an extreme hardness of 1800 HV. To ensure reliably that the rotating bezel of the diving watch does not detach under harsh impacts, it is attached as a captive bezel to the central part of the case. The ratcheting is mounted on a sophisticated bearing system. Slightly radially offset locking pin positions protect the toothed ring, ensure reliable function over the long term and facilitate firm and secure ratcheting with a rich clicking sound.

The water-resistance and pressure resistance of 100 bar (= 1000 m water depth) was certified for the diving watch U1 by Germanischer Lloyd, Hamburg. The safety test pressure used for this purpose was 125 bar.

  • My first mechanical wrist watch for many years (the last was in the days before quartz) came to me as a gift just over a year ago. Made by Robin Loomes it has a "heritage" Smiths movement and is a fantastic thing - I love the way it is balanced so that it keeps better time when you wear it. While worn for work every day and fairly sturdy, I was worried about it getting wet and knocked when worn outside the office. In truth I know the Smiths movement has been taken up Everest and Mr Loomes wears his at all times, but it was a plausible reason to go looking for another watch...

Really appeals to me as a watch brand - largely because it barely passes muster in the sense of being a brand (think Bremont's Mayfair boutique and celebrity wearers). Apparently even the guy who took one into space had to buy his own. As P&C described to me - Sinn is basically a watch research facility that sells a few of their more successful prototypes.

The video on this site gives a very good impression of this watch. I went for the bracelet with the integrated leather strap as an alternative which is easy to switch with the high quality watch tool supplied. Only niggle is the small numerical date though this doesn't detract from the dial - personally would be happy to do without it completely. It is a wonderfully chunky thing without being overly large. Now if I knock into things I worry about the damage caused by the watch rather than any scratches it may have suffered - it inspires confidence.

Delighted with buying experience. Videos on the site are some of the most informative I found and really is worth ringing for a chat - they know their stuff. I was tempted by the tegimented version of the U1, though after talking through happy to go with the standard - not exactly talked out of it, but helped to make the right decision. Leather strap was not in stock and while there was a delay in this coming in and then a mistake in the size - this was posted out to me for Saturday delivery with a handwritten note of apology. Can't ask for more.
